I hope this finds you well – breathing, moving, and pausing as often as you can. I recently got back into my advanced teacher training courses, and I felt really excited by some of the simplicity of the “advanced” practice. Slowing down, paying attention, and then slowing down a little bit more. Slowing down and practicing not-doing at times can be extremely counter-cultural for most of us. And since I’ve had rebelliousness in my blood since I was a kid (I bought a “Question Authority” bumper sticker before I had a car to put it on), I get excited about practices that move against the grain.
Here’s my yoga update for the fall. I promise we’ll keep moving and studying yoga asana (postures), but also keep moving deeper into simplicity as we do it!
* The Next Mount Baker Community Yoga session starts this Monday, Oct. 20. As always, the six-week session is discounted if you sign-up for all six classes ($60). Please register now here if you plan on doing all six classes (pay online or on Monday). Or drop-in any time if pre-registering doesn’t fit your schedule. Also note that we’ll be dedicating the third Monday of the month to doing a more gentle and restorative practice, so bring a blanket as well as your mat if you can on 10/20 and 11/17!
* Lotus classes are great, and sometimes there’s even more space (ie smaller classes) for personal attention, so come try out Lotus if you’ve been meaning to! I’m there Wednesday afternoons (2:30 Parent and Baby Yoga, 4:30pm and 7:30pm for All Levels classes) and Thursday mornings (9:30 am for Gentle Yoga.) I am often teaching similar themes in my Mt Baker and Lotus classes, so they compliment each other well.
* Yoga for Parents of Children with Special Needs Workshop is back this fall. Sunday, Nov. 2, 1-4 pm at Lotus Yoga. See here for more details: https://www.facebook.com/events/734820836602325/ or go to Lotus’s workshops page to register. $30 pre-registration, $40 day-of.
* Donation-based community classes at the Hillman City Collab are back starting in November. Tuesdays 4-5:15pm. I am one of a few rotating teachers in this yoga-for-all-bodies class. The Collab is a great community center to support, so you get yoga and support the creation of a community resource at the same time.
* Private Yoga/Therapeutic Yoga. I have a couple openings if you’re looking for specific, personalized support in your practice.
I wish you well! And in the spirit of not taking ourselves too seriously in our quest for wholeness, unity, and light, I leave you with one of my favorite writers.

Online yoga resources
I want to pass on a great article from a friend and yoga visionary, Jacoby Ballard, published online at Yoga Journal. It’s about an interview with Jacoby about how we might expand the circle of who feels welcome practicing yoga by examining power and privilege, bringing more awareness to the yoga world. Check it out here: Jacoby Ballard on Power, Privilege and Practice. Jacoby has been featured along with many other great teachers thinking about these issues at Decolonizingyoga.com. A great article I found there recently is called “The White Yogis 9-Step Guide Toward Action For Racial Justice in Ferguson and Beyond.” And for great anatomical information and other interesting reflections on yoga practice, I’ve recently been reading the blog Yoga for Healthy Aging.
I look forward to seeing you soon.
With love and respect,
It was great to see many people out at Yoga in the Park last weekend! I hope to do a repeat in August — or at least let you know about other outdoor yoga activities!
The late summer series of Community Yoga in Mt Baker will run July 28 – Aug 18, Mondays 6-7:15 pm. Register here for the four classes, $40. If you won’t be here for all four classes, you are always welcome to drop-in. (We’ll take another two week break at the end of summer and resume the Monday after Labor Day.)

Monday evenings in Mt Baker
We’ve had a fabulous regular group over the past couple months at this Community Yoga class! There will be no class this Monday, 5/26. The next 6-week session will run June 2 – July 7. Class is 6pm-7:15pm at the Mt. Baker Community Club. Please pre-register here (you can pay online or at the first class). Preregistration helps me plan, so thank you if you do this!!
Lotus Yoga Wednesdays and Thursdays
I am teaching in Columbia City at Lotus Yoga:
– Wednesdays, 4:30-5:45 pm
– Wednesdays, 7:30-8:45 pm
– Thursdays, 9:30-10:45 am
The Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning classes are new to the studio and still relatively small classes, so come to those if you want more personalized attention. I’ve been really happy transitioning to teach more at Lotus – it is a super welcoming, warm, and beautiful studio. If you haven’t been by, come check it out. lotusyoga.biz
Summer yoga outdoors!
I’ve gotten to practice yoga in my backyard recently and felt so grateful – and wobbly! – in connecting directly to the ground. The dirt and grass and buttercups all feel wonderful under my feet, and when I look up I really am saluting the sun and praising the trees. So I’m looking forward to some outdoor yoga this summer! I don’t have dates yet, and may wait until the last minute to do it when the weather is perfect. Probably the best way for me to let you know about those outdoor sessions is through facebook — you can like/follow me through this page: https://www.facebook.com/kristahansonyoga If you don’t use facebook (a) that’s great! and (b) let me know and I’ll put out a special call to you if I do this last minute.
Other yoga opportunities with fabulous Seattle teachers
Next weekend there are a couple workshops with teachers I highly respect — definitely worth checking out if they sound interesting to you.
– May 31, “Yoga for Traumatic Recovery” with Laura Humpf. http://satmato.com/events/
– May 30-31, “Women, Power, Perfectionism and Yoga” with Denise Benitez and Bianca Raffety. http://www.seattleyogaarts.com/WorkshopsYogaArts.html
I look forward to seeing you on the mat, in the park, or deep in the waters of Lake Washington soon!!
Hello yoga friends! And happy spring!
I hope you all have had time to walk, garden, or in other ways soak in the very exciting light of spring. I just attended another module in my “advanced” teacher training (“advanced” in quotes because I think advanced yoga means you’ve been putting this all into practice more decades than I’ve been alive…), but it gave me lots of juice and excitement about teaching.
I’ve heard from a few people that they could use a reminder about where and when I’m teaching these days. The schedule is always online here, but the basic south Seattle class schedule is:
|Mondays||6-7:15 pm||Mt Baker Community Club|
|Tuesdays||4-5:15 pm||Collab Community Yoga in Hillman City|
|Wednesdays||4:30-5:45 pm||Lotus Yoga|
|Wednesdays||7:30-8:45 pm||Lotus Yoga|
|Thursdays||9:30-10:45 AM||Lotus Yoga Gentle Class|
|Fridays||6:15-7:15 AM||Mt Baker Community Club|
For those of you coming or interested in coming to the Monday night Mt Baker Community Classes, the schedule is as follows:
* We have two more classes in this series (tonight and 3/31). You’re welcome to come to any class, even if you haven’t attended others in the series. The sessions are built around a general theme, but I design classes to be available to anyone who drops in as well.
* There will be a break the week of April 7.
* We will resume on April 14, with a series running 4/14 – 5/19. You can sign up now for that series, http://kristaleehanson.com/classes/register-2/
Finally, I am excited to be preparing offering a “Yoga for Parents of Children with Disabilities” workshop, May 18, 1-4pm. If you know people who are interested, please let them know to save the date!!
PS – Have I mentioned that I’m using facebook? It’s probably the best way for me to communicate any last minute changes in my schedule: www.facebook.com/kristahansonyoga
Mt Baker Community Yoga
Our last Wednesday evening class will be tonight — Feb. 12, 7-8:15pm. Next week there won’t be any class.
Starting the last week of February, the Mt Baker Community Yoga classes will switch to Monday evenings, 6-7:15 pm. I’ll continue to loosely organize my teaching into 6-week long themes. The focus for the next six weeks will be heart, chest, and upper back movement. I look forward to some more deep breath exploration as well as back-bends and related shoulder exploration. The next series will run Monday Feb. 24 – March 31. The six class series is $60, drop-in price is $12-15 sliding scale. Register for the series now!
Yoga Fridays, early morning!
Come join the wonderful community of early-morning yogis in Mt. Baker each Friday morning, 6:15-7:15 am! This class is run by the South Side Booty Camp (open to everyone!). For information on signing up and prices, go here.
Classes at Lotus Yoga in Columbia City
I am honored to be joining the teachers at Lotus Yoga in Columbia City. I’ve loved Lotus ever since I moved to Seattle because the teachers bring together all the things I love about yoga — community building, an environment that is welcoming to all kinds of yoga seekers, deep knowledge of anatomy and body movement, and commitment to a full body/mind/spirit yoga practice. I’ll be teaching All Levels classes at Lotus on Wednesday evenings, 4:30-5:45 pm and 7:30-8:45 pm, and likely a more gentle class on Thursday mornings. I hope you’ll come explore this beautiful yoga studio with me! I have discount passes for new students – $40 for 5 classes – so please let me know if you’d like one.
I continue to enjoy teaching private yoga classes, especially to people looking for support in personalizing a practice for mental health, stress and anxiety reduction, or adapting yoga to support living with disability. Please contact me if interested.
Wishing you a healthful, heart-filled February,
